  Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), is the largest establishment under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space. VSSC is engaged in the development of Sounding Rockets, Launch Vehicles, Space Craft Subsystems and other Space related fundamental research activities. VSSC is the lead Centre for carrying out all the major Launch Vehicle Projects of ISRO such as PSLV, GSLV, GSLV MkIII, Re-usable Launch Vehicle (RLV), Space Capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE) and advanced missions such as Inter Planetary Missions, Manned Mission and First Indian Moon Mission (Chandrayan-1) etc. The multi-disciplinary responsibilities entrusted with VSSC offer challenging career opportunities to bright and result-oriented Graduates in Engineering/Science, who are capable of executing time-bound, state-of-the-art tasks of national importance in various positions. Post Nos. 1091 and 1092 are for the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL), VSSC.  SPL conducts basic research in different disciplines of Atmospheric and Space Sciences.  The disciplines include Boundary Layer Physics, Physics and Chemistry of Aerosols, Clouds and Radiation, Atmospheric Dynamics, Upper Atmospheric and Ionospheric Physics, Planetary Atmospheric Physics, etc.  Well-equipped laboratories and major experimental facilities have been built exclusively for carrying out research in these studies.     

The selected candidates will be working in the areas of Atmospheric and Space Sciences under the guidance of Senior Scientists of SPL on  various projects and they should be willing to work anywhere in India (including remote places) and on ship cruises to collect the required data.

  Interested candidates may fill up the on line registration form after going through the general information, guidelines and conditions. Applications will be received on-line only. Last day for registering application is December 14, 2007. Upon registration, applicants will be provided with an on-line Registration Number, which should be carefully preserved for future reference. E-mail ID of the applicant will have to be given in the application compulsorily. After submission, it is mandatory for the applicant to send a confirmatory copy of the application by speed post without which online application will not be considered. The last date for receiving the confirmatory copy is December 19, 2007 .


General Conditions:

  1. The posts are temporary, but likely to continue.

2.       No Age limit for the post of Scientist/Engineer-SD (Post No.1092).  Age limit for Post No. 1088, 1089, 1090 and 1091 is 35 years as on January 1, 2008.  38 years for OBC and 40 years in the case of SC/ST candidates.  Ex-Servicemen & Persons With Disability (PWD) are eligible for age relaxation as per rules. Children/family members of those who died in the riots of 1984 will be given preference in recruitment by giving necessary age relaxation as applicable.

  1. Approximate salary at the minimum of the grade per month as on date is Rs.18,180/- for Post No. 1088, 1089 ,1090 and 1091 and Rs.22,680/- for Post No.10922.
  2. The Organisation has a progressive HRD policy and provides an excellent growth potential for the right individual through its periodical merit based performance review system (called Flexible Complimenting Scheme) de-linked from availability of higher post, by which the staff can be evaluated for the advancement of their career in the Organisation. 
  3. 6.       At present the place of posting is VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram, but the selected candidates are liable to be posted in any of the Centres/Units of the Indian Space Research Organisation/Department of space situated  anywhere in India as and when required.

9.       Outstation candidates called for Interview will be paid to and fro Second Class Railway Fare by the shortest route including reservation/sleeper charges on production of proof of journey such as Railway Tickets/Ticket Number or Bus tickets, etc.  If the candidates travel in a higher class of accommodation than the one prescribed, only Second Class rail fare excluding the reservation charges/sleeper charges will be paid.

Selection Procedure:
The Selection process leading to confirmed admission unfolds in two stages:

GITAM University offers the following Research Programmes for the year 2007-08:
I. GENERAL:
1. M. Phil (Part –time / Full-time)
2. Ph.D. (Part – time / Full-time)

1.The Directorate of Admissions, GITAM University invites applications for admissions into the above Research Programmes in the subject areas indicated in Appendix- I, for the year 2007-08 based on merit in the qualifying examination/ entrance examination and as per the admission rules.
2.Admission for the following categories will be taken up during any time of the year.
(i) Candidates with JRF (CSIR/UGC)./ NET Qualification)
(ii) Candidates under FIP programme and
(iii) Candidates under extramural category.
3.Eligibility criteria for M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes offered are given in Appendix II.
4.Candidates are advised to go through the information brochure carefully and apply for admission. The applications will be processed as per the claims of the candidates at the time of submitting the application only, and the admissions will be subject to the validity of their claims.
5.(i)A candidate must satisfy the admission criteria. .
(ii)Allowing a candidate for Counseling does not guarantee a right of admission into the course of the study.
(iii)The decision of the admitting authority is final.
(iv)Candidates admitted into research programme by furnishing false information are liable for prosecution and cancellation of seats without notice
6.Candidates admitted to full-time M. Phil./ Ph.D. should not undertake any assignment / employment or study any other course simultaneously.
7.The University reserves the right to admit or not to admit the candidates into any Research Programme.
II. HOW TO APPLY:
1.Candidates have to submit a separate application form for each programme accompanied with a D.D. for an amount of Rs.500/- (Rupees five hundred only) towards processing fee drawn in favour of the Director of Admissions, GITAM University on any nationalized bank payable at Visakhapatnam. The name of the applicant should be written on the reverse side of the D.D. and the fee once paid will not be refunded.
2.Application forms completed in all respects should reach the Director of Admissions, GITAM University, Rushikonda, Visakhapatnam-530 045 by Post or in person before 5-00 p.m. on 05 -12-2007.
3.The Office of the Directorate of Admissions will not take any responsibility for the non-receipt of applications sent by post or courier or the late receipt of applications due to postal delay or for any other reason whatsoever.

III. ADMISSION INFORMATION:
1.Admissions shall be based on the percentage of marks in the qualifying examination / entrance examination subject to the fulfillment of the eligibility criteria and by following the rule of reservation.
2.Candidates at the time of admission should submit the following original certificates in support of the qualification and reservations claimed in the application.
i.Postgraduate/ M. Phil original Degree/ Provisional Certificate.
ii.Marks statements of Qualifying Examination.
iii.Transfer and Conduct Certificate from the institution where the candidate last studied.
iv.Certificate of NET / GATE score card
v.Migration Certificate for candidates from other than GITAM University.
vi.Date of Birth Certificate (SSC/Matriculation or equivalent Certificate)
vii.Integrated Community Certificate issued by the competent authority in case of SC/ST candidates.
viii.The candidates opting for admission under PH quota should produce relevant certificate, in addition to the above.
ix.Physical fitness certificate.
x.One set of Xerox copies of all the above certificates.
xi.Service certificate and No objection certificate from the present employer (for part-time candidates only).
IV. ELIGIBILITY AND FEE STRUCTURE:
Eligibility for M.Phil :
1.Full-time:
Post-graduate degree holders of GITAM University or any recognized University with II class securing at least 55% of marks (50% in the case of SC/ST Candidates) in the subject concerned or in an allied subject, can apply for full-time M.Phil. degree, and their admission is based on the merit in the entrance test GITAM-RCET. Preference will be given to candidates with UGC / CSIR-NET qualification subject to the fulfillment of the above condition regarding marks.
2. Part-time:
Candidates satisfying the above eligibility conditions can apply for part-time M.Phil programme. Admission into part-time category will be made in the following order of priority with service seniority in each category.
a)Teachers working in GITAM University Colleges/Departments. With atleast one year of service.
b)Teachers working in PG Departments of other recognized Universities and their affiliated Colleges with two years of service.
c)Teachers working in Degree colleges and professional colleges affiliated to recognized Universities with at least three years of service.
d)Executives / Administrators / Engineers with at least threeyears of service in Govt / Quasi Govt / Judiciary / Public Sector organizations / Public and Private Limited Companies and other organizations whose annual turnover is not less than Rs.5 crores.
e)Teachers working in Junior Colleges, Polytechnic colleges with at least four years of service.
f)Non-teaching employees of GITAM University with at least four years of service.
g)Persons not covered in the above clauses with at least five years of service

1.Full-time:

c)Scientists working in research institutions recognized by GITAM University with a minimum of two years of service.
d)Teachers working in any Degree / Professional colleges affiliated to any recognized University with M. Phil / equivalent degree or PGs with a minimum of three years of service.
e)Executives / Administrators / Engineers with at least three years of service in Govt / Quasi Govt / Judiciary / Public Sector organizations / Public and Private Limited Companies and other organizations whose annual turnover is not less than Rs.5 crores.

3.Extramural :
The research institution where the candidate is working should be recognized by GITAM University and there should be an internal guide (Principal guide) recognized by GITAM University for admission into Ph.D. programme under Extramural category. Admission into extramural category will be made for the following candidates:
a)Scientists with P.G. or equivalent degree working in research institutions recognized by GITAM University having at least two years of service.
b)Research scholars with P.G. or equivalent degree having fellowship attached to institutions recognized by GITAM University.
4. Interdisciplinary Research :
A candidate who registers for Ph.D. whose work involves two or more departments in the University will be admitted under interdisciplinary category and will be registered in the Department in which the major part of the research work is to be carried out under the guidance of a Research Director / Guide and a Co-Research Director / Guide from the other department. Candidate who wishes to pursue interdisciplinary research must submit a statement of purpose along with the application. The statement may contain the objective, definition of the problem, methodology, justification and the disciplines involved (major and related).
The research degree shall be awarded in the Faculty where the major part of the research work is carried out.
5. Fee Structure :

Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA)

8 Fully Funded Prize PhD Studentships

The alliance brings together internationally leading physics research across Scotland to form the largest physics grouping in the UK. Major research themes being pursued are astronomy, condensed matter and materials physics, nuclear and plasma physics, elementary particles, photonics and physics and life sciences.

The Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) is offering up to 8 fully funded PhD studentships for outstanding students from anywhere in the world. These prestigious and competitive awards are intended to attract outstanding students to study for a PhD in Scotland. Applicants will be registered for a PhD in physics at one of the participating Universities namely Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Glasgow, Paisley, St Andrews and Strathclyde. An excellent training environment will be provided by the SUPA Graduate School, giving candidates access to a wide range of courses across Scotland.

The online SUPA Prize Studentship is looking to recruit the best early stage researchers from a world-wide market to come to Scotland and help drive the research agenda in physics. The competition has run three times very successfully. In the first year of operation, the Prize Studentship Competition had 127 applications from 34 countries. 10 studentships were awarded. The second year of operation, the Prize Studentship Competition saw an increase in applications and countries represented with 186 applications from 50 countries. 9 students were awarded the prize studentships. In our third year we had 230 applications again from around 50 countries and we awarded 15 studentships.

The SUPA Graduate School has 7 state of the art video-enable teaching rooms in each of the 6 SUPA partner physics departments and in the University of Dundee. All SUPA students have access to a comprehensive selection of advanced courses being delivered across the country by SUPA partners pooling expertise in the main theme areas of SUPA viz nuclear and plasma physics, photonics, condensed matter and material physics, astro and space, particle physics and physics and life sciences. In 2006-07, the first year of operation, we offered a total of 611 lecture hours across a choice of 48 graduate courses and 4 distance learning courses. Three Learning Technologists support video-enabled teaching and develop e-learning materials for the Graduate School. Students and staff within SUPA have access to My.SUPA - a customised learning portal to enhance and support teaching, learning, communication and collaboration within the alliance.

In the Institute of Safety Research of the Research Center Dresden-Rossendorf for the period from 01.01.2008 until 31.12.2010 a vacancy is announced as Phd student.
The salary is according to the German TV-L (50 %). In the case of successful work, an up-grading of the salary is possible.

Requirements:
Diploma or MSc in nuclear technology/nuclear engineering, physics or (applied) mathematics skills in nuclear or reactor physics as well as numerics/programming are useful experience in performing reactor physics calculations/handling of reactor physics codes are desirable ability and addiction to theoretical research good knowledge of English language, preferably knowledge of German.

Tasks:
High-temperature reactors consist of a large reactor core with graphite structures as neutron moderator As coolant acts helium gas which is from the point of view of neutron physics practically equivalent to vacuum. This is of relevance for reactor physics because neutrons are streaming through the coolant channels without interaction. This may lead to significant anisotropy of the neutron flux. That's why the task consists in the development of a method for the description of anisotropy effects in the neutron flux in gas-cooled high-temperature reactors.

Specific tasks are:
Improvement of existing mathematical approaches for transport corrections in the neutron diffusion equation
Implementation into the reactor code DYN3D
Verification of the method against reference solutions obtained by applying Monte Carlo or deterministic transport codes
Elaboration of a PhD work, publication of results.

State Engineering Admission Tests (SEAT) & All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)

   The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) conduct the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the States organise State Engineering Admission Tests (SEAT). The All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

AIEEE is for admission to the engineering courses offered by Deemed Universities, Central Institutions other than those covered by the IIT-JEE as well as by other Institutions in States/Union Territories, falling under the AIEEE scheme. Apart from this, admission for both the free and payment seats meant for students from other States in State-level Institutions will also be from the merit list of AIEEE, the syllabus for which will be drawn from the syllabi of different State Board Examinations.

Eligibility Criteria

A pass in the final examination of the 10+2 system or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as three subjects

Students appearing for the qualifying exam in the year of admission can also appear in the tests

Students may also refer to the announcement of the specific Institution or Testing Authority, since eligibility as well as other criteria such as age, domicile, etc., may vary from Test to Test and State to State
