PhD positions: cryo-Electron Tomography

Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter
Delft, 2628 CJ (Zuid-Holland), 40 hours per week
Job description
We have two interrelated research positions to achieve one nanometer resolution in tomograms. The first is directed towards the experimental data collection protocol based on low-dose statistics and the development of a new forward model which properly accounts for a space-variant CTF and beam-sample interactions in inhomogeneous media. In the second project we want to develop data-driven image processing strategies for noise suppression before and during regularization in reconstruction, while including a space-variant CTF correction.

Research
The goal of this project is to enable one nanometer resolution in 3D electron tomography image volumes of frozen biological specimen after reconstruction from a low-dose cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy tilt series (TEM). This increases the resolution by a factor of 3 to 7 (dependent on imaging and sample condition), which is enormous in electron imaging where fractional increases by tens of percentages have been typical in the last three decades. The three road blockers to achieve this goal are: 1. limited irradiation dose; 2. local variations in the imaging conditions - not only lateral due to tilt, but also axial due to sample thickness; 3. complex wave propagation through inhomogeneous media.
The first hampers all computations and requires dedicated image processing that takes advantage of the local image structure and clever regularization of the reconstruction process. The second requires estimation of a space-variant contrast transfer function (CTF) in 3D space to avoid a systematic error in the imaging model. The third causes scattering of electrons which hampers the inverse problem in which we compute a distribution of electron potential.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
The candidate must have a strong background in physics and mathematics and hold a MSc. degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering. Experience with electron microscopy and optics, image processing and reconstruction is desirable.

SELECTION PROCESSSelection to OCES/DGFS is a two-step process: screening to short-list candidates followed by interview of the short-listed candidates. Except for RSE discipline (code 44), there is a separate selection process for each of the other disciplines listed in Table-1(refer website). RSE is available only as an additional option to applicants for Physics and Chemistry disciplines (codes 41 and 42).

1. Screening for the Engineering disciplines (codes 21-29) is done by two alternative methods:a) GATE Score:Cut-off GATE Score for short-listing candidates for interview is decided after the last date of receipt of applications. b) Written Test: It is conducted in each of the seven Engineering disciplines (codes 21-27). Travel Allowance is not paid for appearing in it. The details of Written test, scheduled on Sunday, May 25, 2008; will be announced later. 2. Screening for the Science disciplines (codes 41-43) is done by two alternative methods:

(a) Written Test:

It is conducted in each of the three Science disciplines (codes 41-43) at the centers listed in Table-5 along with their codes. Travel Allowance is not paid for appearing in the written test. Written test is scheduled on Sunday, February 24, 2008. Syllabus of each Written Test discipline is as follows: Physics: Mathematics during BSc and MSc (Physics & Electronics) or equivalently BE (Engg. Physics). Chemistry: Std XII (Mathematics), Physics during BSc, and MSc (Chemistry). Biosciences: Std XII (Mathematics), BSc (Physics & Chemistry - Bio/ Agri) and MSc (all eligible Post graduate specializations mentioned in the OCES/ DGFS-2008 Advertisement). (b) GATE Score:

Here, merit list in each of the Science disciplines (codes 41-43) is prepared on the basis of valid GATE Score of the applicants. Cut-off GATE score and Written test marks for short-listing candidates for interview in each discipline are decided after the last date of receipt of applications. A candidate applying for Science disciplines (codes 41-43) can (i) opt to appear for the written test, or (ii) apply on the basis of valid GATE Score, or (iii) may opt to appear for written test and also apply for selection on the basis of valid GATE Score. Selection Interviews of short-listed candidates are conducted in BARC Guest House, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai-400 094. Outstation applicants are paid to and fro second-class sleeper train fare by shortest route or actual fare whichever is less. Probable dates of selection interview are June 16, 2008 to July 11, 2008. List of short-listed candidates and Interview schedule will be declared on our website from May 20, 2008 onwards. Interview call letters will also be posted to those short-listed for interview.Final Selection is done on the basis of performance in interview subject to medical fitness.

M.S. Science Communication - National Council of Science Museums

M.S. Science Communication is offered by the National Council of Science Museums, an autonomous scientific and research organization in Kolkata under the Ministry of Culture. It offers a two-year postgraduate programme. The Essential qualification for the course is you should be an engineering or technology graduate in mechanical/information technology/computer/telecommunication/instrumentation/chemical/production/metallurgy or possess I class M.Sc degree in physics/chemistry/bioscience/environmental sciences. This course is for people who want to train as professional science communicators, but are unsure which employment sector might suit them best. Academic and practical components provide a broad overview of the professional science communication landscape. The course introduces some of the contemporary debates surrounding science and its communication. It examines the recent work in the humanities and social sciences that questions assumptions about both science and communication.

The course module is divided into two parts. The first part introduces debates about the nature of science, its relation to other disciplines and the broader culture. The second half further develops ideas about social constructivism by looking at how media texts are constructed. The career opportunities after the course include print journalism, new media work, broadcast television or radio production and presentation, public affairs and public relations, museums/galleries and festivals, science policy work, academic research and development, and teaching.

PhD Studentship Biosynthesis in microfluidic devices by manoeuvring magnetic particles Department of Chemistry

A PhD studentship, funded by the EPSRC, is available within a multi-disciplinary team developing "Lab on a Chip" devices, for example for point-of-care analysis at the patient̢۪s home or scene-of-crime analysis in forensics. The aim of this project is to perform biosynthesis and analytical chemistry on the surface of single magnetic microparticles that can be manoeuvred through microfluidic devices via external magnetic fields.

The successful candidate will join an internationally established research team in the area of lab-on-a-chip devices. The preferred start date is February 2008, although later dates can be considered if necessary. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, applicants with a good BSc (1st or 2.1) or MSc degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or Life Sciences can all be considered. Knowledge of analytical chemistry and/or microfluidics would be of advantage but are not essential. Only UK/EU citizens are eligible for full funding (maintenance, stipend and tuition fees). The student stipend will be £12,600 per annum (tax free).
