REGISTRATION FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.)
1. Eligibility for Registration
Admission for Ph.D. registration shall be made on the basis of an entrance test conducted by the University of Kerala. No candidate shall be allowed to apply for the test unless he/she has secured 55% marks and above for his/her qualifying P.G. degree examination.

SC/ST candidates shall be given a relaxation of 10% marks in science and 15% marks in other subjects. However, one seat in each subject shall be reserved for SC/ST provided they qualify in the test. A relaxation of 5% marks shall be allowed to candidates with 10 years teaching experience. Candidates who have qualified U.G.C./C.S.I.R/ G.A.T.E. test or who possess an M.Phil Degree by research and thesis shall be exempted from the test.

University/ College teachers with seven years teaching experience are exempted from the Entrance Test. Candidates with DM/M.Ch. Degrees is also exempted from appearing for Ph.D Entrance Test.
2. Application for Entrance test/Registration
Application for Registration shall be made in the prescribed from and in the manner prescribed so as to reach the office on or before the date notified by the University.
3. Centre for Research
Research shall be carried out by a Research Scholar in a University Department or a Department of a College recognised as a Centre for Research, or in a recognised institution, under an approved Research Guide or Guides.
4. Selection
a) Registration in the University Department:- Application for admission as Research Scholar in a University Department of Study and Research received on or before the prescribed date shall be scrutinized by the Departmental Doctoral Committee. Selected candidates shall join the department within one month of the receipt of the intimation regarding registration of the candidates from the University. However, the Departmental Doctoral Committee shall be competent to grant an extension of one month in exceptional cases.

b) Registration in a Department of an Affiliated College/Recognised Research Institution: In the case of a candidate intending to join a recognised department of an affiliated college or a recognised institution for research, the application for admission shall be made to the Registrar which shall be accompanied by the consent letter from the supervising teacher and a Facility Certificate from the Head of the centre for research. In the case of candidates from institutions other than University Departments, the Departmental Doctoral Committee along with the supervising teachers will form the Doctoral Committee. In the case of subjects not offered in the University Departments, the Doctoral Committee shall consist of the supervising teacher (as convener) and the experts nominated by the Syndicate of whom one shall be the chairman of the Committee.
5. Part-Time Research
(a) Part-time PhD registration shall be restricted to teachers of the University in the concerned subjects and to those persons engaged in research institutions provided they should qualify the entrance test.

(b) In exceptional cases based on the recommendation of the Doctoral Committee the Syndicate may allow persons other than teachers in affiliated colleges to register as part-time research scholars provided they should qualify the entrance test. Part-time Research Scholars other than those working and/or residing in the head quarters of the supervising teacher should spend a period of at least six months at a stretch or in not more than three installments at the Centre for Research before they are allowed to submit the thesis. The Head of the centre for research should furnish a certificate showing that the candidate has worked in his institution at the time of submission of the thesis.

(c) On the recommendation of the supervising teacher, the Doctoral Committee may consider the request by a candidate for conversion of registration from full-time to part-time or vice-versa and make appropriate recommendations to the University.

(d) Candidates applying for registration to do part-time research shall produce along with the application a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) from the employer concerned.
6. Inter-Disciplinary Research
Candidates intending to do research on topics of an interdisciplinary nature may have a joint supervising Teacher if the Doctoral Committee so recommends.
7. Supervision of Research Work
a) Research shall be undertaken by a scholar under the guidance of an approved Supervising Teacher.

b) A Research scholar working under a particular Supervising Teacher who has retired from service may continue to work in the same institution under the guidance of the same Supervising Teacher, subject to the discipline of the institution.

c) The number of research scholars under a supervising Teacher should not exceed ten, whether full-time or part-time. The maximum number of candidates permitted to work under different categories of Research Guides are as follows:
1. Those working in University Departments
2. Those working in recognised research institutions
3. Those working in recognised departments of affiliated colleges
4. Those retired from service and others
d) The Supervising Teacher shall not be an immediate relative of the candidate.
8. Periodical Review of the Work
The Doctoral Committee shall review the work of the research scholar in the Department once in six months and record its decision and report the matter to the University.
9. Period of Research
The minimum period of research required by a candidate for submission of the Thesis from the date of registration shall be two years for M.Phil/M.Ed./M.Sc. Engineering Degree holders and three years for others The maximum period of research shall be five years for full time and eight years for part-time after which period the registration shall automatically lapse. The maximum period of research for part-time candidates in physical Education, Management Studies and Applied Science in six years.
10. Restriction of Employment
A full-time research scholar is not allowed to engage himself/herself in any employment either full-time or part-time.
11. Change of the Topic of Research
Based on the recommendations of the Doctoral Committee, the Syndicate may permit a research scholar to change the topic of research within one year from the date of registration.
12. Change of the Title of Thesis
Modifications of the title of the thesis may be effected on the recommendations of the Supervising Teacher and the Head of the Department, with the approval of the vice-chancellor, any time before the submission of the thesis.
13. Change of the Supervising Teacher
The syndicate shall be competent to allow the change of a Supervising Teacher in extraordinary cases at the request of the candidate and on recommendation of the Doctoral Committee.

CSIR will hold Joint CSIR-UGC Test for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lecturership (NET) June, 2008 at 25 centers on 22.06.2008 (Sunday)

The information Bulletin and Application Form for this UGC NET 2008 test will be sold from 12.02.2008 to 03.03.2008 (at all stations including Delhi) through designated brances of Indian Bank & Oriental Bank of Commerce. Regarding Conditions of Elgibility, Scheme of the Test, Centres of Examination, List of designated brances of the Bank for availability of forms etc., the interested eligible candidates may go through their Notification No.10-2(5)/2008(i)-EU-II as published in the 'Employment News' issue date 09th February 2008.

The candidates should apply only on the prescribed form supplied in the Information Bulletin within the prescribed last date for receipt of completed application form by Examintion Unit, CSIR i.e., 10.03.2008 (17.03.2008 for remote areas). 1. CSIR will hold the National Level Test on 22nd June, 2008 for determining the eligibility of the Indian national candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers (NET) in certain subject areas falling under the faculty of Science. The award of Junior Research Fellowship (NET) to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding admission/placement in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.

1.1 A candidate may apply either for 'JRF + Lectureship' both or for 'Lectureship (LS) only' He/she may indicate his/her preference in col.3 of the application, as the case may be. CSIR may consider candidates applying for 'JRF + LS' for 'Lectureship only" depending on number of fellowships available. If a candidate is found to be over-age for JRF (NET) he/she will automatically be considered for Lectureship (NET) only.

1.2 Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF - NET) and the second, of those candidates qualifying the Eligibility Test for Lectureship (NET), will be made on the basis of their performance in the above Test. Candidates qualifying for JRF (NET), will also be eligible for Lectureship (NET). The candidates qualifying for Lectureship will be eligible for recruitment as Lecturers as well as for JRF-ship in a Scheme/Project, if otherwise suitable as per the eligibility criteria of that Scheme/Project. However they will not be eligible for Regular JRF-NET Fellowship. They will be eligible to pursue Ph.D. programme with or without any fellowship other than JRF-NET. Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF (NET) will receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignment or from the Schemes with which they may find association.

1.3 The result of the examination to be held on 22.06.2008 may be declared sometime in the month of October, 2008 and fellowship to successful candidates could be awarded from 01.01.2009.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

M.Sc. or Equivalent degree under the subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above, with minimum 55% marks for General & OBC candidates; 50% for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates and Ph.D. degree holders who had passed Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991.

A candidate can also apply for the Test under RA (Result Awaited) category, if he/she is appearing or has appeared in his/her final year (III/IV Semester where Semester system is there) of M.Sc. OR equivalent Degree Examination in subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above during the academic Session 2007-2008. Such candidates will have to submit the attestation format (given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Deptt./Institute over his/her signature and rubber stamp (with address and name) from where the candidate is appearing or has appeared in the final year M.Sc. or equivalent degree examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Test provisionally. They shall be considered eligible for JRF-(NET)/LS-(NET), if they are able to produce the proof of having passed the Master's Degree examination in the relevant or related subject with the requisite percentage of marks and within the stipulated time frame.

AGE LIMIT& RELAXATION

For JRF (NET): Minimum 19 Years and maximum 28 years as on 01-01-2008 (upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, Physically handicapped/Visually handicapped and female applicants).

For LS (NET): Minimum 19 years, as on 01.01.2008. No upper age limit.

Negative marking will be made for wrong answers in Paper I. Paper II will be evaluated only in case of those candidates who will be able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I as may be fixed by the CSIR. Candidates are required to appear in both the papers. A candidate who does not appear in Paper I will not be permitted to appear in Paper II. The questions in all these papers will appear both in Hindi and English.

A candidate may opt for any of the above centres. No request for change of centre would ordinarily be granted. However, a request for change of Centre may be entertained on merits, if received in this unit latest by 31.03.2008.

Applicants should apply to only one TWAS Fellowship Programme per year, choosing the most suitable programme for his/her needs. This applies to the following fellowship programmes: CAS (China), CNPq (Brazil), CEMB, ICCBS (Pakistan), IACS, DBT, CSIR and S.N. Bose (India), Research & Advanced Training and Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists in Sub- Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South (TWOWS).

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World [formerly Third World Academy of Sciences] (TWAS), Trieste, Italy – www.twas.org – and the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, India – www.bose.res.in – have agreed to offer five fellowships annually to young foreign scientists from developing countries who wish to pursue research leading towards a PhD in physical sciences.

Programme Details
1.The fellowships, tenable at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India, will be awarded to young students from developing countries to enable them to pursue studies leading towards a PhD degree in physical sciences.
2.Admission to the PhD programme at the S.N. Bose National Centre will depend on the successful completion of course work (about one year's duration).
3.Successful candidates will be provided with an S.N. Bose National Centre "Junior Research Fellowship" starting from the first year, amounting to Rs 8,000.00 per month as well as free on-campus accommodation. In the event that accommodation on campus is not available, an additional amount of Rs. 2,400.00 will be paid towards house rent. The Centre may also provide travel expenses for participation in conferences, seminars etc., on a case-by-case basis.
4.TWAS will cover the cost of international air travel (economy class and shortest route) as well as other expenses incurred in connection with the travel to India and back home.
5.Applicants must apply to only one TWAS Fellowship Programme per year. For example, applicants to the BOSE postgraduate programme cannot also apply to other TWAS Fellowship Programmes, including those provided through CAS (China), CNPq (Brazil), CEMB, ICCBS (Pakistan), IACS, DBT, and CSIR (India), Research and Advanced Training, and TWOWS Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South.

Electronic structure and physics of materials.
Soft condensed matter, complex systems and statistical physics.
High energy physics and mathematical physics.
Optics, mesoscopic phenomena and chemical physics.
Astrophysics.
Experimental physics: magnetism, in particular manganites, Birkhaussen effect, Mössbauer spectroscopy, superconductivity, mechanical stress-strain relaxation, dielectric spectroscopy in the nano and pico time scales, as well as noise measurements in terms of resistance fluctuation spectroscopy.
Nano science and technology: Synthesis of nano materials; physical measurements using scaling probe microscopy; mesoscopic phenomena; electronic structure and modelling; nanolithography; nanobiophysics.
Theoretical chemistry: Density functional theory, quantum fluid dynamics and applications; atoms/molecules under intense or super-intense laser fields; atoms/molecules under strong magnetic fields; quantum chaos; computational quantum chemistry (novel molecules, nanoclusters, biomolecules, drug-DNA interaction modelling); theoretical spectroscopy and relaxation phenomena; simulation studies and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Eligibility:
Candidates for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
1. be a maximum age of 30 years on 31 December of the application year;
2. be nationals of a developing country (other than India) and be employed at a university or research institution there;
3. hold a Master's degree in physics, mathematics or physical chemistry.
4. Applicants must be accepted at a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre in India in order to be eligible for the fellowship (see sample Acceptance Letter).
5. Applicants should submit the Acceptance Letter from a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre when applying or by the deadline at the latest. However, applicants can send their application form to TWAS before obtaining the preliminary acceptance ONLY if a preferred host department is indicated, so that, if needed the S.N. Bose National Centre can assist the candidate in obtaining preliminary acceptance from the designated host department. In these cases, applicants will have until the deadline to submit the acceptance letter to TWAS. Without preliminary acceptance the application will NOT be considered for selection.

Important to note
Incomplete/unsigned applications will NOT be accepted. This also applies to submissions by fax and electronic mail which must include all enclosures and be signed (either digitally or by including a scanned signature).

NOTIFICATION

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to be academic programmes for the academic year 2008-2009 as listed below. Admission are based on Common Admission Test (CAT)/ Department Admission Test (DAT)/Test for Lateral Entry (LET). Eligibility conditions and other particulars appear in the detailed notification published in the national dailies viz, Malayala Manorama, The Hindu dated 29.2.2008 and also available at the Website of the University www.cusat.nic.in.

Those who are applying for First Degree Programmes in Engineering & Technoogy (B.Tech and Integrated M.Sc in Photonics): the CAT will be conducted on all India basis with test centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Ranchi, Varanasi, Allahabad, Jamshedpur, Kota, all district head quarters of Kerala and Overseas Centre at Dubai.

Those who are applying for PG Programmes / First Degree Programmes including LL.B/ both Programmes: the CAT will be conducted oly in the Centres at all the district head quarters of Kerala and New Delhi.

The University reserves the right to cancel any or all the notified test centres for administrative reaons including dates/rules and regulations relating to programmes of study, eligibility, reservation, admission criteria, fee structure and other relevant matters. All disputes related to CAT shall be subject to the jurisdiction of Courts at Kochi only. Appearance in the CAT or figuring in the Rank list does not ipso facto confer any right for admission to a particular course unless found suitable as pr the eligibility criteria as amended from time to time.

PRL invites applications from highly motivated students to pursue doctoral research in the following areas : Theoretical Physics; Space and Atmospheric Sciences; Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Solar Physics; Planetary and Geosciences; and Experimental Laser and Atomic Physics.

Applications are to be made in the prescribed form which should be submitted online at their website http://www.prl.res.in . If you are unable to submit the form online, you may download the form and send it by email or post. In case you have no access to internet, printed application form may be obtained on request by post by enclosing a self-addressed envelope with postal stamps of Rs. 10/- affixed on it.

Eligibility: (i) M. Sc. in Physics/Space Sciences/Atmospheric Sciences, or (ii) M. Sc. in Chemistry (Physical, Nuclear or Analytical)/ Geology/Geo-physics/Oceanography/Marine Sciences. Candidates with M.Sc. in subjects covered in (ii) will only be eligible to pursue research in the field of Planetary and Geosciences. They must have Physics and Mathematics at the B.Sc. level. A minimum of 60% marks at the Master's level is required for all candidates. Those appearing for Master's Degree examination in 2008 are also eligible to apply.

Selection Procedure: Written test, followed by personal interview for those who qualify based on the written test. These will be held at the PRL main campus at Ahmedabad. Written test may be waived for candidates who have qualified in any one of the following three: (i) JEST-2008, with exceptionally good rank; (ii) GATE (in Physics) in 2007/2008, with exceptionally good rank; (iii) UGC-CSIR NET in 2006/2007 in Subject Code–1: Chemical Sciences, or Subject Code–2: Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean & Planetary Sciences, or Subject Code–5: Physical Sciences. A photocopy of result of the GATE/NET certificate must accompany the application, if applicable. If the NET certificate is not available a copy of the admit card and a print-out of the online results with the candidate's roll number circled should be sent. Candidates who have qualified JEST-2008 should mention their roll number, rank and percentile.

Stipend & Facilities: Rs. 12,000/- per month, raised to Rs. 14,000/- per month after two years, subject to satisfactory progress; a book grant of Rs. 5,000/- per year; and accommodation at a nominal charge. Short-listed candidates called for written test/interview will be paid II-class return train fare by the shortest route and per diem as per PRL rules.
