CSIR will hold Joint CSIR-UGC Test for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lecturership (NET) June, 2008 at 25 centers on 22.06.2008 (Sunday)
The information Bulletin and Application Form for this UGC NET 2008 test will be sold from 12.02.2008 to 03.03.2008 (at all stations including Delhi) through designated brances of Indian Bank & Oriental Bank of Commerce. Regarding Conditions of Elgibility, Scheme of the Test, Centres of Examination, List of designated brances of the Bank for availability of forms etc., the interested eligible candidates may go through their Notification No.10-2(5)/2008(i)-EU-II as published in the 'Employment News' issue date 09th February 2008.
The candidates should apply only on the prescribed form supplied in the Information Bulletin within the prescribed last date for receipt of completed application form by Examintion Unit, CSIR i.e., 10.03.2008 (17.03.2008 for remote areas). 1. CSIR will hold the National Level Test on 22nd June, 2008 for determining the eligibility of the Indian national candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers (NET) in certain subject areas falling under the faculty of Science. The award of Junior Research Fellowship (NET) to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding admission/placement in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.
1.1 A candidate may apply either for 'JRF + Lectureship' both or for 'Lectureship (LS) only' He/she may indicate his/her preference in col.3 of the application, as the case may be. CSIR may consider candidates applying for 'JRF + LS' for 'Lectureship only" depending on number of fellowships available. If a candidate is found to be over-age for JRF (NET) he/she will automatically be considered for Lectureship (NET) only.
1.2 Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF - NET) and the second, of those candidates qualifying the Eligibility Test for Lectureship (NET), will be made on the basis of their performance in the above Test. Candidates qualifying for JRF (NET), will also be eligible for Lectureship (NET). The candidates qualifying for Lectureship will be eligible for recruitment as Lecturers as well as for JRF-ship in a Scheme/Project, if otherwise suitable as per the eligibility criteria of that Scheme/Project. However they will not be eligible for Regular JRF-NET Fellowship. They will be eligible to pursue Ph.D. programme with or without any fellowship other than JRF-NET. Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF (NET) will receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignment or from the Schemes with which they may find association.
1.3 The result of the examination to be held on 22.06.2008 may be declared sometime in the month of October, 2008 and fellowship to successful candidates could be awarded from 01.01.2009.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
M.Sc. or Equivalent degree under the subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above, with minimum 55% marks for General & OBC candidates; 50% for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates and Ph.D. degree holders who had passed Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991.
A candidate can also apply for the Test under RA (Result Awaited) category, if he/she is appearing or has appeared in his/her final year (III/IV Semester where Semester system is there) of M.Sc. OR equivalent Degree Examination in subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above during the academic Session 2007-2008. Such candidates will have to submit the attestation format (given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Deptt./Institute over his/her signature and rubber stamp (with address and name) from where the candidate is appearing or has appeared in the final year M.Sc. or equivalent degree examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Test provisionally. They shall be considered eligible for JRF-(NET)/LS-(NET), if they are able to produce the proof of having passed the Master's Degree examination in the relevant or related subject with the requisite percentage of marks and within the stipulated time frame.
AGE LIMIT& RELAXATION
For JRF (NET): Minimum 19 Years and maximum 28 years as on 01-01-2008 (upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, Physically handicapped/Visually handicapped and female applicants).
For LS (NET): Minimum 19 years, as on 01.01.2008. No upper age limit.
DATE AND SCHEME OF THE TEST
The Test will be held in two sessions on Sunday, the 22nd June, 2008 as under: -

Negative marking will be made for wrong answers in Paper I. Paper II will be evaluated only in case of those candidates who will be able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I as may be fixed by the CSIR. Candidates are required to appear in both the papers. A candidate who does not appear in Paper I will not be permitted to appear in Paper II. The questions in all these papers will appear both in Hindi and English.
EXAMINATION CENTRES
The test will be held at 25 Centres spread all over India, specified below:
Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Karaikudi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Pilani, Pune, Raipur Roorkee, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur and Varanasi.
A candidate may opt for any of the above centres. No request for change of centre would ordinarily be granted. However, a request for change of Centre may be entertained on merits, if received in this unit latest by 31.03.2008.

Applicants should apply to only one TWAS Fellowship Programme per year, choosing the most suitable programme for his/her needs. This applies to the following fellowship programmes: CAS (China), CNPq (Brazil), CEMB, ICCBS (Pakistan), IACS, DBT, CSIR and S.N. Bose (India), Research & Advanced Training and Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists in Sub- Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South (TWOWS).
The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World [formerly Third World Academy of Sciences] (TWAS), Trieste, Italy www.twas.org and the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, India www.bose.res.in have agreed to offer five fellowships annually to young foreign scientists from developing countries who wish to pursue research leading towards a PhD in physical sciences.
Programme Details
1.The fellowships, tenable at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India, will be awarded to young students from developing countries to enable them to pursue studies leading towards a PhD degree in physical sciences.
2.Admission to the PhD programme at the S.N. Bose National Centre will depend on the successful completion of course work (about one year's duration).
3.Successful candidates will be provided with an S.N. Bose National Centre "Junior Research Fellowship" starting from the first year, amounting to Rs 8,000.00 per month as well as free on-campus accommodation. In the event that accommodation on campus is not available, an additional amount of Rs. 2,400.00 will be paid towards house rent. The Centre may also provide travel expenses for participation in conferences, seminars etc., on a case-by-case basis.
4.TWAS will cover the cost of international air travel (economy class and shortest route) as well as other expenses incurred in connection with the travel to India and back home.
5.Applicants must apply to only one TWAS Fellowship Programme per year. For example, applicants to the BOSE postgraduate programme cannot also apply to other TWAS Fellowship Programmes, including those provided through CAS (China), CNPq (Brazil), CEMB, ICCBS (Pakistan), IACS, DBT, and CSIR (India), Research and Advanced Training, and TWOWS Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South.
Research Areas carried out at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences:
Electronic structure and physics of materials.
Soft condensed matter, complex systems and statistical physics.
High energy physics and mathematical physics.
Optics, mesoscopic phenomena and chemical physics.
Astrophysics.
Experimental physics: magnetism, in particular manganites, Birkhaussen effect, Mössbauer spectroscopy, superconductivity, mechanical stress-strain relaxation, dielectric spectroscopy in the nano and pico time scales, as well as noise measurements in terms of resistance fluctuation spectroscopy.
Nano science and technology: Synthesis of nano materials; physical measurements using scaling probe microscopy; mesoscopic phenomena; electronic structure and modelling; nanolithography; nanobiophysics.
Theoretical chemistry: Density functional theory, quantum fluid dynamics and applications; atoms/molecules under intense or super-intense laser fields; atoms/molecules under strong magnetic fields; quantum chaos; computational quantum chemistry (novel molecules, nanoclusters, biomolecules, drug-DNA interaction modelling); theoretical spectroscopy and relaxation phenomena; simulation studies and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
Eligibility:
Candidates for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
1. be a maximum age of 30 years on 31 December of the application year;
2. be nationals of a developing country (other than India) and be employed at a university or research institution there;
3. hold a Master's degree in physics, mathematics or physical chemistry.
4. Applicants must be accepted at a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre in India in order to be eligible for the fellowship (see sample Acceptance Letter).
5. Applicants should submit the Acceptance Letter from a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre when applying or by the deadline at the latest. However, applicants can send their application form to TWAS before obtaining the preliminary acceptance ONLY if a preferred host department is indicated, so that, if needed the S.N. Bose National Centre can assist the candidate in obtaining preliminary acceptance from the designated host department. In these cases, applicants will have until the deadline to submit the acceptance letter to TWAS. Without preliminary acceptance the application will NOT be considered for selection.
Important to note
Incomplete/unsigned applications will NOT be accepted. This also applies to submissions by fax and electronic mail which must include all enclosures and be signed (either digitally or by including a scanned signature).
Deadline for receipt of applications at TWAS Secretariat: 31 August of each year.
