NOTIFICATION FOR ADMISSION TO M. Phil DEGREE COURSE – 2009

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to M.Phil Degree Course in the following University Teaching Departments (viz. Arabic, Bio-technology, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Education, English, Folklore Studies, Hindi, History, Journalism & Mass Communication, Library & Information Science, Life Sciences, Malayalam & Kerala Studies, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Russian & Comparative Literature, Sanskrit, Statistics and Zoology). 

Eligibility
Candidates who possess Master's Degree in the subject concerned or any other relevant subject approved by the Board of Studies with not less than 55% marks of this University or equivalent degree of any other Indian or Foreign Universities are eligible to apply for the same. For OEC candidates 5% mark relaxation shall be given. In the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category and teachers under FIP scheme, a pass in the qualifying examination is sufficient. 

Entrance Examination
There will be an entrance examination conducted by the Heads of the concerned Departments of the University. The entrance examination shall consist of objective and descriptive type questions of 50 marks each. The duration of the examination shall be two hours.
Candidates who secure 50% marks and above in the entrance examination are eligible for admission to M. Phil Course. Candidates belonging to SC/ST category need only 35% marks to qualify in the entrance examination. Teachers of affiliated colleges (under FIP Scheme) are exempted from the entrance examination.
Out of the total number of seats in each Department 50% shall be reserved for students and 50% for teachers under FIP Scheme. If there is no eligible candidate in one category, eligible candidates from the other category shall be considered.

The filled in applications shall be forwarded to the concerned Heads of Departments of the University on or before06-08-2009along with the original chalan receipt for Rs.50/- remitted towards fee to Calicut University Fund.

Kerala University - Entrance Ph.D/M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research Degree

Applications in the prescribed form are invited from eligible candidates for the General Aptitude Test for determining eligibility for admission to full time/part time research leading to Ph.D/M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research Degree.

Conditions of Eligibility

Candidates who have secured not less than 55% marks at the Master's Degree Examination are eligible to apply for the test.

Bachelor's Degree holders in Engineering with not less than 55% marks are eligible to apply for the test for securing eligibility for admission to M.Sc. (Engg.) by Research.

Candidates belonging to schedule castes and scheduled tribes who hold Master's Degree in Science and Applied Science faculties with at least 45% marks and Master's Degree in other faculties with 40% marks are eligible to apply for the test.

Physically/visually challenged candidates are eligible for a relaxation of 5% marks.

Candidates who have appeared for Master's Degree Examinations and whose result is still awaited may also apply for the test. However, such candidates will be considered eligible for admission to research leading to Ph.D Degree provided they pass the Master's Degree Examination with at least 55% marks and have been declared qualified in the test.

Candidates who have already qualified in the National Eligibility Test for Junior Research Fellowship or Lectureship of the UGC/CSIR or ICAR/ GATE or ICMR JRF test or candidates who are selected for fellowship by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment or the State Level Eligibility Test conducted by the Kerala Government or who hold M.Phil. Degree by research and thesis in addition to a Master's degree or equivalent with not less than 55% marks are exempted from eligibility test.

Scientists/Engineers working in approved Research Laboratories either owned or managed by the Central/State Government or an Autonomous Research Institution of National Status with seven years experience in the Grade Scientist/Engineer, having two research papers published in the recognized research journals of the concerned subject approved by the Board of Studies concerned, are exempted from the Ph.D Eligibility Test.

College teachers who have seven or more years of teaching experience are also exempted from the Eligibility Test. Candidates with DM/M.Ch.Degree are exempted from appearing the test.

Those who have qualified in M.Phil. in subjects other than the subjects in which he/she is seeking registration for Ph.D would be required to qualify in the Eligibility Test.

Registration will be granted to the eligible candidates only if the concerned Supervising Teacher has vacant seats at the concerned Research Centres.

Part-time Registration

Only teachers of affiliated colleges and University Departments and persons engaged in research activities at research centres are eligible for part-time registration.

The Test

The Eligibility Test shall be conducted in November, the exact date of which will be notified later.

Scheme of the Test

The general aptitude test will be of three hours duration and will carry a maximum of 200 marks. The test comprises of General Knowledge (40 marks) Short answers (120 marks) and an Essay (40 marks). Post graduate level knowledge of the subject and aptitude for research are expected of the candidate

Candidates can apply only in the subjects offered by the University and go in for specialization at a later stage, while choosing the topic of research for registration for Ph.D.

While applying for the Eligibility Test the candidates should carefully choose the subject most suitable according to their qualifying P.G. Degree/choice of area of interest for doctoral research.

Mode of Application

Candidates should apply in the prescribe form and send the applications to the Registrar. All relevant documents proving qualifications and eligibility should be sent along with the application duly signed and attested by a Gazetted Officer.

Application forms can be had from the Section Officer, Forms Section, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram or by post.

General

1. The cost of application form is Rs.10/-and the fee for the test is Rs.750/-. For candidates belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes the fee for the test is Rs.375/- (Rs.10/- service charge in case of DD).

2. All remittances should be made either through University Cash Receipt or Demand Draft issued by the State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of India or District Co-operative Bank drawn in favour of the Finance Officer, University of Kerala, payable at Thiruvananthapuram.

3. Requests for application forms by post should be accompanied by self addressed and sufficiently stamped envelopes. Likewise the application furnished for the examination should be accompanied by self addressed stamped and easily detachable envelope for sending hall ticket.

4. Copies of Masters Degree Certificate and Mark list attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the application. A comprehensive mark list showing the exact percentage of marks secured or an equivalent certificate should be furnished.

5. Copy of the appropriate certificate from competent authority in the case of S.C/S.T candidates, attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the application.

6. Candidates who have appeared for the Masters Degree Examination and whose results are still awaited should send a copy of Hall Ticket attested by a Gazetted Officer along with the application.

7. Candidates who have qualified post graduate examination from Universities other than University of Kerala, should submit a copy of the eligibility certificate attested by a Gazetted Officer. Pass Memo will be issued only on submission of Eligibility Certificate even if qualified in test.

8. Fee once paid will not be refunded. 9. The photograph attached to the application and Hall Ticket should be attested by a Gazetted Officer and the name and designation of the officer should be clearly shown.

The last date of receipt of application is 17 August, 2009.

Candidates should note that qualifying in the General Aptitude Test does not automatically, imply that they have been granted registration for research leading to Ph.D/M.Sc. (Engg.) Degree. Separate applications should be made for registration. The verification of the eligibility conditions with reference to the recognition of their qualifying degree and compliance of other formalities will be taken up only when the candidates apply for registration.

The minimum qualification for admission to BEd course is 45% marks in Bachelors degree in Science / Arts in aggregate (for part I + II + III) secures 45%  marks for part III subjects.  For Commerce BEd, the eligibility is 45% marks for M.Com degree.

Fellowship for M.S. in Science Communication

National Council of Science Museums, an autonomous Scientific & Research organization under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, engaged in popularization of Science & Technology among the people at large, is offering five Post Graduate Fellowships for a period of two years commencing January, 2010.

Selected fellows will undergo full time, four Semester, Master of Science (PG) Course in Science Communication being conducted by the Council, in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani on an off-campus mode. The lectures and tutorials would be held at National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata.

Applicant should be a 1st Class Bachelor's Degree holder in Engineering or Technology in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Information Technology/ Telecommucation/ Computer/ Metallurgy/Chemical/ Production Engineering or 1st Class M.Sc. Degree holder in Physics/Chemistry/Zoology/Botany/Biotechnology /Environmental Science.

Fellowship will be Rs.8.000/- per month for two years with a contingency grant of Rs.8.000/- per annum.

Mere possession of requisite qualifications shall not entitle the candidates to be called for the Test and Interview.

• BEd Social Science – BA History main with 45% marks for Part III or BA Politics / Economics / Islamic History under Part III (45% marks) with at least  one paper  in History as subsidiary.

• BEd Commerce – M.Com with 50% marks.

• BEd Home Science – MSc Home Science with 50% marks.
 
Selection will be on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying  examination together with weightage  marks for  Post graduation, Teaching experience, Sports, Locality, NCC/ NSS etc.

How to Apply
 
Prescribed application form and prospectus  can be obtained from the KUCTE Centers on payment of  Rs. 20/- through pay-in-slip at the University cash counter or obtain through post by sending  a requisition letter along with a DD for Rs. 30/- drawn in favour of the Finance Officer, University of Kerala issued by SBT branches payable at SBT Service Branch, Trivandrum and a self addressed long cover affixing Rs.10/- postage stamp (Those from outside Kerala, should  submit DD from SBI branches payable  at SBI Main Branch,Thiruvananthapuram) to the  Principal of the concerned KUCTE Centers.

Name and Address, purpose of remittance should be noted in the reverse side of the DD. A registration fee of Rs. 200/- remitted through  pay-in-slip at the University Cash Counter or through DD of Rs. 210/- should be send along with each duly filled in application form and its details may be shown   in the application.

The DD should be drawn  infavour of the Finance Officer, University of Kerala, issued either by the SBT Branches payable at SBT Service Branch Thiruvananthapuram. Applicants from outside Kerala shall submit DD from SBI branches payable at SBI main branch Thiruvananthapuram. Name, Address and purpose of remittance should be noted on the reverse side of the DD.
 
Separate  application forms  are issued for each  district. Those applying for the same optional  subject  at different centers of one district need submit only one  application. Those  who desires  to  apply more than one district should submit separate application issued for that  district.
 
Duly filled in application along with DD and documents in support of eligibility should send to the Deputy Registrar (Acad. III), University of Kerala, Palayam,  Thiruvananthapuram – 695 034 so as to reach on or before 31st  July 2009.
 

Tuition  fee is Rs. 18000/- and Total fee of Rs. 21075/- should be remitted at the time of admission.

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE :
The admissions procedure (in all subjects except Science Education) consists of a written test at one of several nationwide centres. People who do not have web access may apply for a Hall Ticket on plain paper (1) stating name, current address, date of birth, e-mail address, Subject of choice, preferred test centre [with a second preference also] and a detailed table of marks from 10th standard onwards. (2) Two passport size photographs : One pasted and one stapled to the application. (3) A Stamped (Rs.20/-) and self-addressed envelope (25cm x 17cm) superscribed "GS-2009 (Subject)". (4) Demand Draft.

Biology:DD should be drawn on State Bank of India payable in Bangalore to "National Centre for Biological Sciences".

Indian Institute of Astrophysics came into existence in 1971. It is a premier institute dealing with the research work in the field of astronomy (space also), astrophysics (solar eclipse, lunar eclipse study etc.) and related physics. It has set up many telescopes in the country and still planning to set up a large telescope. 
The candidates will be given a chance to move towards a research oriented career. The candidates will be required to work at different sites and carry out research operations related to astrophysics etc.
Eligibility: A candidate must be an Indian citizen. The age of a candidate must not exceed 25 years. Relaxation can be claimed as per the rules.
Qualification required: A candidate must have a first class degree in M.Sc or M.Phil (Physics /Astronomy / Astrophysics / Optical Sciences) OR a B.E/B.Tech degree in CSE, IT, ECE, Electrical, Mechanical or Instrumentation. The candidates with their results awaited can also apply.
Pay Scale: Only a stipend of Rs. 10000 will be given along with the HRA during training period.
