INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS
BHUBANESWAR
Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The research activity in the Institute centers around the areas of theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and high energy physics. The institute has a large number of experimental facilities such as the 3 MV Pelletron accelerator (and associated beam lines for carrying out RBS/Channeling, PIXE, AMS, Implantation etc.), low energy negative ion implantation facility, HRTEM, XPS, ARUPS, XRD, X-ray reflectometry & standing waves, I-V, C-V, micro-Raman, PL, FTIR, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, SPM (in air) etc. Very recently, the Institute has added an ion beam induced nanopatterning facility, a large area-high precision atomic force microscope (AFM) with in-built nanoindentation & nanolithography, a high-resolution SEM system, focused ion beam (FIB) system, and a surface profilometer. The Institute is going to strengthen its thin film and nanomaterials growth facilities by adding a few new facilities, viz. UHV e-beam evaporation system, DC/RF sputtering system with glancing angle deposition facility to grow of 3-D nanostructures, and Pulsed Laser Deposition system besides the existing MBE system. In the 11th plan period more experimental facilities directly related to the emerging area of Nanoscience and nanotechnology are expected to be added. The Institute has been actively involved in international collaborations, notably among them are experiments in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN, Geneva and BNL, USA. One of the important objectives of the Institute has been to train and guide young scholars for research in physics. For this, the Institute has regular one year Pre-doctoral (post M.Sc.) course work and Doctoral research program for those who successfully complete the Pre-Doctoral course. The Institute campus has hostels for the Pre-doctoral and the Doctoral scholars.
The Pre-doctoral program is designed to train fresh M.Sc. students for conducting research activities. It is aimed at imparting a broad based training in advanced physics and research methodology. The course work is planned with the view that it should help a student not only in doctoral research, but also enable him/her to become a good physics teacher irrespective of whether or not he/she takes up doctoral research. The Pre-doctoral course runs from August to June every year. The successful candidates are awarded certificates for “Post-M.Sc. Course in Advanced Physics” which has been recognized by the Utkal University, Berhampur University, and Sambalpur University as equivalent to their M.Phil degree.
On completion of the Pre-doctoral program, the students are eligible to join for research under the
supervision of faculty members of the Institute, leading to the Ph.D. degree awarded by Homi Bhabha
National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be University funded by the Department of Atomic Energy.
During the Pre-doctoral and the first year of the Ph.D. program, students are placed in Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) grade and are paid Rs. 12,000/- p.m. fellowship. On satisfactory performance after the first year of the Ph.D. programme, they are placed in Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) grade and paid Rs. 14,000/- p.m. fellowship. In addition, there is a contingency grant of Rs. 15,000/- per year to meet expenses on books and for domestic travel to attend conferences and workshops. The medical facilities are available on-par with the regular employees.
The Institute invites application for the Pre-doctoral Program from Indian nationals having the following qualifications:
M.Sc. Physics with minimum 55% marks (in aggregate).
(A) GATE qualifiers with minimum score of 95 percentile and having current validity OR CSIR / UGC- NET qualifiers (for research fellowship) within last one year.
Candidates who have qualified JEST-2010 with a minimum score of 95 Percentile need not send any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. If a candidate has scored less than 95 percentile in JEST-2010 but satisfies any of the criteria for GATE/NET as above, he/she should also send the application.
Candidates appearing for the final semester/year of M.Sc., who have already qualified in GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET can also apply. They should submit the relevant proof before joining the pre-doctoral programme. In case of non-availability of the M.Sc. results at the time of joining, the admission will be treated as provisional.
Application in prescribed format (given below), should be sent only by E-mail as DOC or PDF file latest by 20th April, 2010 to admit{AT]iopb.res.in.
Admission Procedure
All eligible candidates, whether through JEST-2010 or through application against this advertisement, will have to appear for a short written test on the morning of 3rd May, 2010. Result of the written test will be published on the same day and short-listed candidates will have to appear for a personal interview between May 03–05, 2010. Final merit list will be prepared based on the scores of both the written test and the interview.
Travel and Accommodation
TA for the candidates called for written test/interview will be reimbursed to & fro by the shortest route in sleeper class including reservation charges. Accommodation would be provided to outstation candidates on request for the days of stay during the test/interview.
