NOTICE FOR THE ENTRANCE  TEST FOR  THE Ph.D PROGRAMME IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS,  UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA
Applications, in the following prescribed format, are invited from candidates, willing to pursue  Ph. D programme in the Department of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta. Subjects/fields/areas of the programme are mainly in the areas of Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. However, if a candidate wishes to apply for admission to the programme from  any interdisciplinary field, a part of which  either falls in the area of  Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering, he / she will have to attach a separate application  in this regard with his/her application form addressed to the Head of the Department for consideration.
Eligibility Criteria :  The following candidates are eligible to apply
  • Candidates having 75% or more marks in Post B.Sc- B.Tech/ B. Tech/ BE or equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering as per CU Ph.D rules-2009.  They should also have at least 75% marks all through their academic career starting from Madhyamik or equivalent Examination. Such  candidates will have to sit for the Ph.D. Programme Entrance Test.
  • Candidates with 1st class M.Tech/ME degree in Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering or allied subjects,  from any AICTE recognized Institute, will be exempted from the Entrance  Test to be conducted by the Department.
  • Candidates having 1st class M.Sc degree in Electronics or Computer Science and who have cleared UGC / CSIR(JRF) examinations/ NET /GATE /SET/ SLET/ Teacher Fellowship or have passed equivalent examinations are exempted from the Entrance Test, otherwise they have to sit for the  Entrance Test.
All candidates, including candidates clearing the Entrance Test, will have to appear in an interview to be conducted by the Department.  A candidate qualifying in the interview will be selected for the Ph.D programme.
On being selected for the Ph. D. Programme, a candidate shall be required to enroll as a probationary Ph.D. student on payment of a non-refundable fee determined by the University.
 Each Ph.D. student, while carrying on his/her research during the tenure of his/her registration, shall be required to undertake a course work for a minimum period of one semester (six months).
In addition, candidates mentioned in item no.(i), after being provisionally admitted to  the Ph.D programme,  will also have to qualify in some other criteria as per CU norms before being registered as a Ph.D candidate.

  • The Ph.D. entrance test will be of Multiple Choice Question type and Short answer question type. The examination will be of 1 (one) hour duration.
  • The questions of the Entrance Test will, in general, cover topics of Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, basics of Physics, Electronics and Computer Science.
  • At the most 20 candidates (in concurrence with the reservation policy) will be enrolled in  the year 2010.
