GRADUATE SCHOOL - GS 2009 :The Academic year starts from August 1, 2009. STIPEND :Ph.D. students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 12000/- enhanced to Rs 14000/- after registration.
ELIGIBILITY :
Mathematics:M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.Tech./M.A./B.A./ B.Sc. degree holders or final year students with a consistently good academic record.
Physics & Chemistry :M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.Tech. degree holders. Fresh B.Sc. graduates with consistently good academic record and knowledge of advanced topics may also apply.
Biology: Ph.D. Programme - M.Sc. in any basic science discipline, M.Sc. (Ag), B.Tech., B.E.,MBBS, B.V.Sc., BDS, B.Pharm. & M.Pharm.
Integrated Ph.D. Programme or M.Sc. -B.Sc. in any basic science discipline/B.Sc. (Agriculture/Horticulture/Fishery).
Computer & Systems Sciences:B.E./B.Tech./M.E./M.Tech./M.Sc. (all relevant disciplines) degree holders or final year students with a consistently good academic record. Fresh B.Sc. students with an outstanding academic record and motiviation for research.
Candidates not holding a Master's degree and admitted to a Ph.D. programme can receive an M.Sc. degree by fulfilling prescribed requirements (see http://www.tifr.res.in/~gsofficefor details).
ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE :
The admissions procedure (in all subjects except Science Education) consists of a written test at one of several nationwide centres. The written test will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2008at the following centres : Ahmedabad (St. Xavier's Coll), Bangalore (UAS), Bhubaneshwar (Utkal U), Chandigarh (Panjab U), Chennai (IIT), Cochin (CUSAT), Delhi (Miranda House), Guwahati (IIT), Hyderabad (Hyderabad U), Indore (Devi Ahilya U), Kanpur (IIT), Kolkata (Goenka College), Mumbai (TIFR), Patna (Patna Sci. College), Pune (Spicer Memorial College), Varanasi (BHU).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE :Applications may be submitted online at http://univ.tifr.res.in
People who do not have web access may apply for a Hall Ticket on plain paper (1) stating name, current address, date of birth, e-mail address, Subject of choice, preferred test centre [with a second preference also] and a detailed table of marks from 10th standard onwards. (2) Two passport size photographs : One pasted and one stapled to the application. (3) A Stamped (Rs.20/-) and self-addressed envelope (25cm x 17cm) superscribed "GS-2009 (Subject)". (4) Demand Draft.
APPLICATION FEE :
Non-Refundable fee of Rs 350/-. Payment can be made online by Credit/Debit Cards OR by Demand Draft.
Biology:DD should be drawn on State Bank of India payable in Bangalore to "National Centre for Biological Sciences".
All Other Subjects:DD should be drawn on State Bank of India payable in Mumbai to "Tata Institute of Fundamental Research".
Hall tickets will be issued only after receipt of application fee. Students sending DD by post may please write their name and telephone number behind the DD and send it to the address as given below. A waiver of the application fee on grounds of financial distress may be requested by a letter from the Principal or the Head of Department justifying the request. These requests would be considered depending on availability of seats in each Centre.
Candidates may appear for the written test in multiple subjects if the timings do not clash. Please send a separate application (including Demand Draft) for each subject.
Last date for receiving applications for Hall-tickets: OCTOBER 14, 2008.
WALK - IN CANDIDATES:
Some candidates without hall tickets may be admitted if seats are available. In this case the application fee is Rs 700/ - (No waivers). Please be present at the centres 2 hours early for Biology and 1 hour early for other subjects and bring all original mark sheets, Demand Draft for Rs 700/- and 2 photos and any photo identity card. Walk-ins will not be possible for Biology in Delhi Centre.
PH :As per rules 3% reservation for students with disablities shall be provided.

Physics, Chemistry and Computer & Systems Sciences : 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
Biology : 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Mathematics : 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
