You are requested to go through the following instructions before filling the online application :

  • Please fill the application form completely; an incomplete application may be rejected. Please fill in the details using title case (Eg: Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research) and avoid usage of only capital letters.
  • No fee is involved to apply for these programmes.
  • Keep the details/particulars/copy of Xth Std / XIIth Std / Bachelor's / Masters qualification certificates / marksheets before starting to fill the online application.
  • Keep the particulars of GATE/JEST/UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICMR for Jrf, like the registration number / roll numbers, paper code etc. as applicable.
  • MTech / ME candidates should enter the details of the entrance examination cleared for joining the programme.
  • Last date for submitting the online application : 15th March 2010.

General Instructions :

  • The Integrated Ph.D Programme is offered in the following areas:

    1. Chemical Science (selection criteria - through Interview).
    2. Evolutionary and Organismal Biology in the Evolutionary and Organismal Biology Unit (selection criteria - through Interview)
    3. Materials Science in the Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit (selection criteria - throughwritten test * followed by interview for the shortlisted candidates).
    4. Molecular Biology and Genetics (selection criteria - through written test followed by Interview at Bangalore for shortlisted candidates) in the Molecular Biology and Genetics Unit.
  • There is provision to apply for more than one unit (multiple units). For eligibility criteria, please refer to our advertisement that has been published in the News Paper or our website.
  • Obtain a demand draft of Rs. 200/- drawn in favour of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, payable at Bangalore and send it to us quoting your application number and the area of research.(One Demand Draft is sufficient for multiple choice of departments / specialisation.)

  • Eligibility criteria and Mode of Selection:
    Materials Science: Students with Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science can apply. Those with Bachelor's degree in Engineering with an aptitude towards scientific research will also be considered. Candidates are expected to have sound knowledge in the fundamentals of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Candidates applying for Materials Science will have to first take a written test and those short listed will have to appear for interview. The written entrance test for Materials Science will be held at four different Centres in the country. The names of candidates selected to appear in the written entrance test  will be displayed on the website:www.jncasr.ac.in/admit.
    Chemical Science: Students with Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science with Chemistry as a major can apply. Candidates will be selected through interviews.
    Biological Sciencea) Evolutionary and Organismal Biology: Students with Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics can apply. Those with Bachelor's degree in Engineering with an aptitude towards scientific research will also be considered. Candidates will be selected through an interview for those who are shortlisted after scrutiny of the application forms.
    b) Molecular Biology and Genetics: Students with Bachelor's degree in any branch of Science can apply. Candidates will be shortlisted to appear for a written entrance test  in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at JNCASR, Bangalore(ONLY) after the scrutiny of the applications forms . Based on their performance in the written test , the candidates will be  shortlisted th same day and called for an  oral examination/interview the next day.

    Scholarships/Fellowships/Assistantships:

    Selected students will receive a stipend of Rs. 8000/- p.m. for the first three years.(Typically, perhaps 20% of this goes towards paying hostel and mess fees, while the annual tuition fee is Rs. 2,000 for the initial period )  At the end of three years, successful students will receive M.S degree  and can embark on the Ph.D. programme with a fellowship and fees as applicable to a Ph.D student.

    * Instructions for those who are applying for Materials Science :

    • The candidate has to fill the option of Test Centres, which cannot be changed once the application has been submitted. Efforts will be made to accommodate your preference of test centre.
    • After submission of the online application click on the HALL TICKET button and take printout of both the copies, affix your photographs (2 nos.), sign at appropriate boxes and send it along with Demand Draft & an additional photograph (identical to the one pasted on the Hall tickets) to
    • The selection committee would be scrutinizing every application form and those who are short-listed will be called for the written entrance examination.
    • There will not be any negative marking for the objective based written examination
    • Names of candidates appearing for the written examination will be available on http://www.jncasr.ac.in/admit/ and hall ticket will be dispatched by post.
