The 5-year Integrated M.Sc. Physics Programme - University of Mysore

It is a global phenomenon that promising students are not taking to Physics any more in the same numbers as they used to a few decades ago.

To cope with this disturbing situation, scientists and academia have repeatedly stressed the need for introducing innovative teaching programmes in Physics which could catch the creative minds when they are still young and receptive and train them into useful career physicists.

The department approached the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India under the FIST programme in 2000-2001 with a proposal to start such an innovative Physics programme for students coming out of their PUC/CBSE/equivalent examination. The DST supported the proposal by approving the course as viable and sanctioned a grant of Rs. 10 lakhs to develop the labs for the intended course.

Course Highlights
  • In addition to the departmental faculty, wherever required, expert teachers and scientists will be invited as guest faculty for the course. As far as possible, a teacher-student ratio of 1:1 will be provided.
  • Lectures by eminent physicists in the field will be arranged periodically to help the students develop a broader perspective in Physics.
  • Tutorials and problem solving sessions will integral part of the course.
  • Every student admitted to the course will have access to an independent computer. Adequate introduction to computer usage, both theoretical and practical will be provided to the students. This includes training in
    • Languages such as C and Perl
    • Scientific document preparation using LaTeX
    • Graphing tools such as Gnuplot
    • Computer algebra packages such as MuPAD and Maxima
  • Students are also encouraged to take up add-on courses on computers and foreign languages at CIST and School of Foreign languages in the Manasagangothri campus.
  • The Department has a good collection of text-books and reference material, in addition to a very large central library. Access to major scientific journals online is also available through UGC-INFLIBNET and JSTOR.
  • Internet access is available in the computer lab round the clock.
  • Students are asked to give seminars on selected topics, every semester. In the final semester, every student has to work on an allotted project and submit a report.
  • To encourage talented students to take up research after successful completion of the course, adequate training will be provided to the students to face the NET/SLET examinations. A placement cell is also envisaged.
  • All the students admitted to the 5 year Integrated M.Sc. Physics programme will be given a scholarship of Rs. 1000 per month. Foreign Nationals are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • No Course fee will be charged by the University. However, the Hostel fee , Examination fee and any other fees fixed by the University will have to be paid by the Candidates.
  • Foreign nationals have to pay a fee of Rs. 40,000 (or equivalent US Dollars) per annum for the first 3 years and Rs. 50,000 (or equivalent US Dollars) per annum for the last 2 years.
  • All students will be provided with a separate hostel facility.
  • The University has a good Gymnasium, Swimming Pool and also offers Yoga training classes.

Eligibility
  • Students from all over India who have passed the Pre-University or any other equivalent examination with a minimum of 60% marks are eligible to apply. Further, the aggregate score in Physics and Mathematics should not be less than 60% (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST candidates).
  • Students should not have exceeded the age of 20 years as on the date of their application.
  • They should not be degree holders of any University.
  • Foreign Nationals who have studied in India are bound by the conditions specified above.
  • The eligibility of Foreign nationals who have studied outside India is decided by the University. The decision of the University in this regard is final and the candidates are bound to accept this decision

Selection Process

The eligible candidates (Indian and Foreign Nationals who have studied in India) will have to write an Entrance test at the level of I.I.T J.E.E-M. The test will be conducted at Mysore. Foreign nationals who have studied in their own countries are exempt from the entrance test.
